Dentist explains the dental implants procedure

Dental implants are a solution used by many patients to restore their smiles after tooth loss occurs. These versatile restorations are used in many situations. They can replace a single tooth, anchor a dental bridge, or provide support for full cosmetic dentures. The decision to place dental implants is up to patients after they have discussed with their dentist the ability to have them placed. Dental implants require patients to have enough bone structure to stabilize the implant in place and allow it to function at its best.

Many patients are curious to learn about the dental implants procedure. The procedure itself is typically short. Beforehand, patients will have an examination completed during which x-rays will be done to check the jawbone. This also allows the doctor to determine the best areas for placement. Patients will also be able to discuss the cost, healing process, and any other questions they may have before the procedure.

The procedure is done under local anesthetics and appropriate sedation to ensure comfort. A hole is drilled into the jawbone in which the dental implant is placed and the area is sutured closed. A few weeks to several months are necessary to allow osseointegration to occur, during which the bone integrates with the implant to give it the stability it needs to function properly.
