Specialized dentistry services in our office near Shelby Township alleviate symptoms of TMJ disorder

Dentistry Services in Shelby Township from Dr. Aurelia

Most people consider their dentist the person to see when a problem has occurred directly to teeth. The dentist can help you avoid cavities and gum disease, and repair teeth that have been damaged in any way. Although the jaw is part of the entire maxillofacial structure, most people do not immediately consider their dentist as the professional care provider capable of handling issues with the jaw.

Research shows that around 15 percent of Americans are dealing with uncomfortable symptoms affecting the jaw, face, neck, shoulders, ears, and head. Upon further investigation of symptoms, many people find that their discomfort actually stems from the jaw. More specifically, pain may be due to dysfunction within the Temporomandibular joints, or TMJs. The Temporomandibular joints, along with the muscles and ligaments to which they are attached, aid in functional chewing and speaking. These These joints are capable of a variety of movements, and can produce seemingly random symptoms should they become overly stressed. Dr. Aurelia is experienced in recognizing and treating TMJ disorder with specialized dentistry services in our office near Shelby Township.

TMJ disorder may stem from a number of situations, such as:

  • Stress
  • Direct jaw injury, or muscular injury to the head or neck
  • Bruxism, tooth grinding or clenching
  • Arthritis
  • Dislocated disc

To devise a treatment plan, Dr. Aurelia begins care by asking questions about the symptoms the patient is experiencing. It is important to know how long the pain has been ongoing, if any particular activities seem to trigger pain, or if popping or clicking occurs when moving the jaw. Some of the symptoms that may be experienced with TMJ disorder include:

  • Pain in the jaw, face, or neck
  • Persistent headaches
  • Earaches
  • Stiffness in the jaw, difficulty chewing
  • Limited range of motion, or locking of the jaw
  • Abnormal wear to teeth

Treating TMJ disorder

Fortunately, there are ways in which the symptoms of TMJ disorder can be reduced, and Dr. Aurelia provides excellent, non-invasive treatment of this condition. Most patients are able to find a great deal of relief from TMJ disorder when existing dental issues affecting the bite are addressed, and a custom-made oral appliance, similar to a mouth guard worn during sports, is designed. This appliance reduces the stress on the Temporomandibular joints, giving muscles and ligaments the opportunity to relax. You do not have to suffer the effects of TMJ disorder. We can help.
