What Are Dental Implants?

When natural teeth are missing, many patients of Dr. Aurelia’s want to make sure they do something about it. Many things can happen to a patient’s smile when a natural tooth is missing.

  • Patients will experience the deterioration of bone underneath the gums.
  • Surrounding teeth may shift out of place to fill the gap that is left.
  • A smile will appear less attractive due to gaps and spaces in the teeth.
  • Chewing and biting efficiency will be lessened.
  • The self-esteem of a patient may change for the worse.

Addressing missing teeth is essential, not only for cosmetic reasons, but for the function and maintenance of a person’s bone, teeth, and gum tissues. Many cosmetic and general dentists may recommend dental implants for patients, as the first choice for replacing missing teeth. Rochester Hills dentist Dr. Aurelia often encourages his patients to consider dental implants to restore their smile.

Dental implants are surgically placed into the bone of a patient’s mouth. They are made of titanium, as this metal is biocompatible with the body. The implant is then given time to heal, which includes the integration of the implant into the bone. This process, which can take several months, is called osseointegration. Once osseointegration is complete, Dr. Aurelia will then fabricate a custom dental crown that is placed onto the top of the implant in order to act as a false tooth. This dental crown will be made to meticulously match the patient’s existing teeth so that the restoration looks as natural and beautiful as the rest of their smile. Cosmetic dentistry allows dentists the ability to make natural-looking restorations for patients who want to improve their smile.

Other alternatives to dental implants include dental bridges and partial dentures, but these are removable, more “short-term” considerations. Dental implants can last a lifetime when well cared for and maintained by both patient and dentist, and are worth their value due to their long-lasting abilities. Patients will often find that they get the best restoration for their money by considering dental implants over the alternatives.

If you are interested in learning more about dental implants, or the alternatives available, call Dr. John L. Aurelia and schedule a consultation. Dr. Aurelia will be able to ensure that you have a smile that you can be proud of, and can help bring forth the self-confidence you’ve always wanted!
