Although dental implants are considered a permanent restoration for replacing missing natural teeth, not everyone is an appropriate candidate for this treatment. Patients who are considering dental implants are required to have sufficient bone structure underneath the gum tissue. This is what the implant uses for stabilization. Without enough bone, the implant procedure may be unsuccessful.
When patients are unable to have dental implants placed to replace their missing teeth, they do have other alternative treatments including partial dentures and dental bridges.
Unlike traditional full dentures, partial dentures are constructed with a metal and plastic framework. Instead of resting on the gums, they use the existing teeth as anchors to latch them into place. False teeth rest comfortably in the spaces left by the missing teeth, and patients are able to restore their smile instantly. Partial dentures are removable, making them easy to clean and care for. They can be adjusted if they become uncomfortable, but are otherwise a wonderful, affordable solution for many patients young and old.
For patients considering a more permanent restoration than partial dentures, a dental bridge may be a great option. This restoration is made with dental crowns and a pontic (false tooth) bonded together. This long porcelain piece is bonded over the adjacent teeth to support it and hold the false tooth in the space. These require extra care for cleaning and maintenance, but are otherwise more permanent in nature. They are not removable, but may need to be replaced over time if they become weak or loose.
