When it comes to orthodontic treatment, there is no shortage of benefits. In addition to a beautiful smile and improved self-esteem, orthodontic treatment can improve the health of the mouth. Orthodontics helps correct jaw alignment, alleviate symptoms of TMJ and can also play a role in preventing tooth decay, gum disease, tooth loss, chewing issues, and even difficulty with speech.
Problems with tooth alignment can impair the ability to chew properly, and may put stress on the jaw or gum tissue causing common symptoms of TMJ. These may include popping or clicking of the jaw, pain around the joint, chronic headaches, blurred vision, stiff or sore jaw muscles, lockjaw, dizziness, or vertigo. While a beautiful smile is important, it’s easy to see how beneficial orthodontic treatment can be for patients who suffer with TMJ disorder.
Orthodontic treatment can be done at nearly any stage of life. For younger patients, early orthodontic treatment can help with the growth of the jaw and simplify future treatment. For adults, orthodontic treatment can help correct issues with bite and make teeth easier to clean, thus improving oral health.
There are many different forms of orthodontic treatment. At our office, we offer the Invisalign system. With Invisalign, patients wear clear, removable aligner trays that gradually shift teeth into the desired position. These clear trays are ideal for adults who wish to discreetly straighten their teeth. Trays are swapped out every two weeks for a new one. Patients are able to remove the trays to eat and clean their teeth.
To begin orthodontic treatment, patients will first need to schedule a consultation appointment. During this initial visit we evaluate the alignment and bite issues within the mouth to assess if the patient is a candidate for Invisalign. From there, impressions and x-rays of the teeth are converted into a 3-D model to map out a treatment plan. The aligners are then custom-made to fit the patient’s teeth and move them into correct alignment.
