At a young age, our teeth are healthy and white. But over time, the enamel coating the tooth is slowly worn down, causing our teeth to become stained and yellow, which is why teeth whitening is becoming increasingly popular today. There are a few methods for whitening. They include at home and in-office. With in-office treatments, you’ll see faster results, receive the safest treatment for bleaching the teeth, and yield the whitest smile. So don’t settle for teeth that have become stained from years of coffee drinking, tobacco use, or just aging. Ask your dentist about whitening options that may be right for you.

The most popular option for teeth whitening is Zoom! whitening. This bleaching process is done chair-side and involves the use of whitening gel that is applied to the teeth and a special light that is used to activate the bleach. This in-office whitening is a fast, affordable way to jump-start a whiter smile, and can be done in as little as one hour at Dr. Aurelia’s office.

Prior to Zoom!:

Use fluoride rinse 2X/day for 14 days to help minimize sensitivity. Do not eat, drink, or rinse for 30 minutes after using the rinse.

Brush and floss prior to the appointment

Take ibuprofen (eg. Motrin, Advil) prior to the appointment for any sensitivity you may experience during or after treatment.

Do not eat or drink one hour before the appointment, as you will not be able to leave the chair for approximately one hour.

Feel free to bring headphones to listen to music, podcasts, audiobooks, etc.

Zoom! post-operative instructions:

Congratulations on completing the Zoom! in-office whitening process! Now that you have completed Zoom!, here are a few suggestions and guidelines.

You will be provided custom trays that fit over your teeth with Relief ACP gel and a whitening gel. The whitening gel can be used for maintenance or to enhance the result of your Zoom! treatment.

Some patients experience thermal sensitivity, or “zingers,”for the first 12-24 hours after Zoom!. If your teeth are sensitive, place the Relief ACP gel in the custom trays you have been provided. Seat the trays over the teeth for 10-30 minutes. Do not spit for approximately 3 minutes. For best results, do not eat or drink for 30 minutes after the application. You may choose to continue to take an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as ibuprofen every 6 hours. Also, an anti-sensitivity toothpaste may help these symptoms.

You will also be provided whitening gel to maintain or enhance the Zoom! result. If your teeth are not too sensitive, use the gel after 24 hours to further enhance your whitening result. All tooth whitening requires maintenance. Use the whitening gel provided for 1-3 nights every 4-6 months, depending on your habits. The additional touch-up whitening gel is available for purchase.

Here are some suggestions for maintaining your smile after the procedure. It is best to avoid dark, staining substances in general, especially for the first 24 hours after Zoom!.

Do not consume coffee, tea, red wine, or tobacco for 2 hours after Zoom!. It is best to avoid these or other dark, staining substances for at least 24 hours to achieve the best result. Also, grapes, berries, or fruit with color, mustard, ketchup, tomato-based products, soy sauce, etc. are best avoided.

Items with a lower staining potential that you may wish to consume for the first 24 hours include milk, water, clear liquids, bananas, apples, bread, plain yogurts, white cheese, rice, potato, plain pasta (or with white sauce), turkey or chicken.

Dr. Aurelia also offers take-home bleaching trays. These trays are custom-fitted whitening trays that are made at Dr. Aurelia’s office to fit your teeth. You are then sent home with instructions and whitening gel, and are able to utilize the gel with the whitening trays to improve the brightness of your smile over the course of several days or weeks. In-home whitening gives patients a little more control over their whitening treatment.

Dr. Aurelia also offers professional-grade whitening strips for use at home, as well as touch up bleaching for those who just need to maintain their smile.

There are many benefits to going to your dentist instead of the drugstore for whitening products. Professional dental whitening products are safe and more effective, thus often saving time and money. The dentist can also monitor sensitivity and offer products to help with the sensitivity in the event it occurs. Additionally, it is important to have a professional cleaning done before your whitening session in order to see the best results.

If you are considering teeth whitening and want to discuss your options with Dr. Aurelia, call today and schedule a consultation appointment. You may be on your way to a whiter, brighter smile!
