TMJ disorders aren’t unique, as millions of people face this issue. However, they can be debilitating, especially if your symptoms are severe. At the office of John L. Aurelia, DDS, PLLC, we offer a range of TMJ treatment options for patients in Rochester, Troy, and the surrounding areas. We’ll work with you to determine the best course of action for long-term TMJ pain relief. Here are some questions we’re often asked about this condition.
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. These two joints, located on either side of your head, hold the jaw in place and enable it to move. A TMJ disorder is a dysfunction of your jaw joints and/or the surrounding muscles.
Jaw pain and stiffness are common TMJ symptoms. Some people get headaches, earaches, and/or neck and shoulder pain. You may also experience limited jaw mobility, numbness, dizziness, a clicking noise when you open or close your mouth, and difficulty chewing.
Stress and anxiety are leading causes of TMJ disorders, especially if it increases bruxism (teeth grinding) and clenching. Facial injuries can cause TMJ problems, as can misaligned teeth and arthritis.
Uncontrolled teeth grinding while you sleep can weaken, wear down, or damage your teeth over time. Your teeth may start to chip or crack from the constant pressure of clenching and grinding. Teeth grinding also places undue pressure on the jaw muscles and joints, leading to jaw and facial pain and other TMJ symptoms.
Yes, mild TMJ symptoms can go away on their own without resorting to major treatment. In some cases, the symptoms are temporary, lasting a few days or weeks, and then disappear. If your symptoms persist, however, or worsen over time, even after taking medication, applying ice packs, or eating soft foods to avoid painful chewing, it’s best to see Dr. John Aurelia or Dr. Dina Khoury for additional treatment. We can address the cause of your pain to provide long-term relief.
We will perform imaging and a comprehensive oral exam to identify the root cause of your symptoms. Based on the severity of your condition, we may recommend one or more of the following treatments:
If dental misalignment is causing or contributing to the problem, orthodontics to realign your teeth and jaw may help you find long-term pain relief. Jaw surgery is generally a last resort for extremely severe cases.
