It may come as a surprise to you that relief for everything from chronic headaches to neck pain is available at your trusted dentist’s office, John L. Aurelia, DDS, PLLC.
TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint connecting the jawbone to the skull. TMD actually refers to a group of TMJ disorders that affect the joint and muscles responsible for jaw movement. While there is still much to learn about TMD, its disruptive symptoms are linked to problems with how the muscles, ligaments, and teeth are positioned.
After years of treating patients with TMD, Dr. Aurelia easily identifies the signs of TMD. Sometimes merely modifying habits such as how often or intensely you chew gum can reduce TMD-related irritation. A dental appliance customized to your mouth is one of the most common, noninvasive approaches to TMD.
Depending on your needs, the oral appliance may reposition the jaw or these types of therapies can be used to correct problems with how the upper teeth and the corresponding lower teeth make contact when your mouth is closed, otherwise known as your bite. Since those who grind or clench teeth in their sleep are also susceptible to TMD, dental appliances may be designed to relieve the stress placed on the joints by grinding and clenching action.
Easy-to-wear, low-maintenance approaches have the added benefit of protecting teeth from excessive wear and other damage, which can result in the need for costly and invasive restorative procedures. They also reduce or eliminate the need for pain medications and muscle relaxers.
