Dental crowns are a versatile restoration that can be used to replace a missing tooth or strengthen a weakened tooth. At the office of Drs. John Aurelia and Dina Khoury DDS in Rochester Hills, we believe dental crowns are a natural looking and feeling solution that can last for many years.
There are several situations that may require the use of a dental crown including:
While there are several types of dental crowns, such as porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, and gold, the one we use most commonly at our office in Rochester Hills is porcelain.
Porcelain is a strong ceramic that very closely resembles natural tooth enamel in color and translucency. Porcelain is durable enough to withstand biting and chewing and is also resistant to staining.
Placing a dental crown requires two appointments. During the first visit, the dentist will evaluate the tooth to make sure that it can support a crown. In some cases, the tooth may require a filling prior to placing the crown. If the tooth can support a crown, it will be filed down to make room for the crown. Impressions are then taken and sent to a laboratory for fabrication of the permanent crown. A temporary dental crown is used to protect the tooth until your second appointment.
The dental lab ceramist will precisely fabricate your crown to the correct size and shape.
Once the permanent crown is ready, you will return for placement. The temporary crown will be removed and the permanent one will be secured into place with a strong dental cement.
There may be an adjustment period following the placement of your crown. As time passes, the crown will look, function, and feel like your natural tooth.
