At the practice of Drs. John Aurelia and Dina Khoury, patients in the Rochester, MI community and beyond can enjoy comprehensive dental care solutions for their smiles. This includes restorative treatments, such as dental crowns. Dental crowns are a popular restoration used in our office, and they have several purposes.
A dental crown, or “cap,” is a restoration that is made to cover the tooth structure to offer strength and protection. This cap is fabricated using materials such as ceramic, that mimic the appearance of natural tooth enamel. The ceramic restoration matches the patient’s existing teeth, so when the restoration is bonded in place, it provides a treatment option that is difficult for others to notice. It appears as though no dental work has been done, ensuring the smile continues to look beautiful.
There are several reasons a patient may have a dental crown. A dental crown may be recommended by the dentist:
Because dental crowns are so versatile, they are a common choice for dentists who are interested in enhancing or restoring a smile. They are fabricated with the help of impressions, which are taken after the teeth are prepared by filing down the natural tooth enamel. These impressions are sent to a dental laboratory where a ceramist will fabricate the dental crown to match the shape, size, and color of the other teeth in the smile, ensuring seamless integration. Within a week or two, the restoration is sent to the dental office where the dentist will bond the restoration in place. In the meantime, many patients will have a temporary crown bonded in place until their final restoration arrives. This process is relatively quick. Patients will find that their final restoration looks and functions like their natural tooth. Patients with conditions such as bruxism (clenching and grinding) should request a mouth guard from their dentist to wear to protect their new restoration from damage.
